Alicia P. is a jewelry designer and fine artist currently working in New York City. Her works & creations bring a fresh originality to the world of art and design. Under her label Designs by Alicia P, she has developed a way to blend her couture work with her skill as a visual artist.

Alicia has had an interest in the arts since her childhood, participating in a number of art apprenticeship programs, where she began to develop a unique style of painting and love for design of all kinds. Raised in Chicago by both her African American mother and Jewish American father, Alicia has been exposed to the best of both cultures; sparking a great fascination with the world around her. After receiving a B.A. from Rutgers University for both Anthropology and Fine Arts, Alicia began to combine her artistic talents and interests.

The diversity in her upbringing and exposure to world provides Alicia the inspiration to create couture jewelry that often integrates found materials and semi-precious stones, provided by both the earth and community. Each of Alicia’s hand made, one of a kind pieces of jewelry, creates a visual experience for each individual client. These pieces, often described as mini sculptures, are a direct result of constant and continual practice of techniques developed by Alicia P. herself.

Her jewelry design work is built upon a foundation of visual art and Alicia’s style is recognizable throughout all her mediums. Her paintings and wall hangings often mimic the shapes and contours of her jewelry. Regularly working with large format oil paintings, the intricacies of her jewelry designs come out as powerful detailed visions of the world around us. Her suede leather craftsmanship has also been integrated into her visual art creating a distinctive style of wall hangings that range in size, style, and emotion. Alicia’s success as a designer stems from her experience and continuous work as a visual artist.

Currently, Alicia is maintaining the rapidly growing business. Her work has been featured in a number of fashion and media outlets, from feature films to print publications including Fader Magazine and Luire (Japan). Her couture jewelry is carried in several boutiques in New York City, and she works with a number of private clients and fashion stylists. Angelica's Revenge is a romantic thriller introducing two characters, an African American male, Trayvon and a Hispanic male, Mario, who are members of two rival gangs. There is nothing new about racial conflict between African Americans and Hispanics in Los Angeles. This long-term warfare can be traced back to the early 90's or earlier. Trayvon's jealous rage elevates the hatred with Mario when Trayvon murders Manny, Mario's twin brother. Revenge fuels Mario's hatred and he takes the lives of Trayvon's parents, which creates destruction within the community. Rosanna, Mario's grandmother is tired of the senseless killing in their community. Does this sound familiar with what's currently happening in the local communities of Southern California? The thought of losing her only grandchild is unimaginable. It has to STOP. She believes in prayer and she asked God for an Angel. Her plea for mercy came in the form of a woman, Trayvon's sister, Josie. Josie brought comfort to Mario's dying grandmother and captivated her heart, but can love conquer the hate in Mario's heart?

Gang violence amongst African Americans and Hispanics daily plagues and pierces communities, homes, neighborhoods, schools and prisons. According to the Los Angeles Police Department's latest crime statistics, Los Angeles is home to more than 400 gangs with more than 39,000 documented members. The department believes with gang intervention programs, gang-related crimes dropped 11.2 percent in 2009 compared to the previous year, and gang related homicides dropped 15.6%. Summers believes one life lost to gang violence is far too many.

Does LOVE CONQUER ALL? Some might say it's just in theory only, not really true, but the question is in many tests in Angelica's Revenge. Will an inter-racial love relationship between African American and Hispanic gang members solve the problem or add fire to flames?

About the Author:
Summers lives in the San Fernando Valley, north of Los Angeles, California. She is a graphic designer, fashion designer and a California University at Northridge graduate. A creative entrepreneur, Summers' clother line, Cowgirl Heaven graced the runways during the recent Los Angeles Fashion Week. She has designed clothes for celebrities like Meagan Good and others. She is also the cover designer of her first novel, Angelica's Revenge. This multi-talented artist has always used her gifts to encourage and inspire others.

I am a clothing designer and the owner of evening wear line Jriaan Fashion.

Where you live (city)?

I am a proud resident of Los Angeles, California.

How and when you started creating your designs?

I began designing when I was twenty years old in 2006. I was taught to sew when I was thirteen by my great grandmother and through the years I kept up with my sewing lessons and developed my own sense of style. I decided pursue evening wear design and my family supported me, and I have yet to look back.

What kind of materials you use and why?

I use textiles for my clothing of course. I tend to veer towards the textiles with rich hues, anything regal tends to inspire me.

When and where you work?

I work from home and I work on my clothing and sketching about 40 hours a week at various times of the day and night.

Where people can find/buy your designs?

How your designs have been influenced by your personal experiences?

My designs are definitely a reflection of my taste in life and my upbringing. They are very livid and edgy and still maintain a sense of poise and class.

Your creative philosophy?

I believe that "nothing good ever came from trying to make others happy" I design my clothing from an honest internal point of view and I don't soften my designs to please the masses. I would also hope that every woman who wore my clothing did so by her own choice and her own taste. I don't want people to compromise their expression. In essence I just want people to be themselves, and feel the confidence and individuality that I stand for as a designer while they are wearing Jriaan.

Its an honor to do a blog feature on my dear friend Heather..We've crashed many red carpet events together and now its time that the big bucks roll in!!!Read more about the Designer below:

1.) How long have you been designing clothes?

I have been designing since August of 2006...when I held my very first show... But I've been sketching out ideas since I was young.

2.) What inspires you to create the pieces of clothing that you bring to life?

I mainly work with recycled vintage clothing.... I usually just start draping and then seeing what I come up with. Or random ideas just pop into my head as I'm redoing the garment. The other line I want to launch is based on my muse, Tom R and the slogans for my t-shirts are from conversations my friend, Carl and I have had.

3.) Can you compare any clothing brands to your own?

Not at the moment.....

4.) Other than your own fashions, what brands do you wear?

I like Forever 21, other vintage finds, H&M, etc...

6.) What's your ultimate favorite pair of heels?

When I can afford them---- Louboutins and YSLs and maybe some Manolos......

7.) Did you ever think your clothing was going to be such a success?

Yes and no.....

8.) I know designing and creating a name for your brand could be a challenge -- trust I know -- How did you come over complications on your road to success?

It depends because I'm not "there" yet.... It's been hard..... I have no investors at this time, so I'm having to pay for everything myself..... I don't have an adequate machine and form, so I have to venture over to the Sewing Lounge in Burbank, which is a Godsend. I can utilize the space and equipment. I'm trying to get my name out there, I've been in several shows, thanks to Parris Harris, so I hope I can keep continuing on to newer and bigger shows.

9.) Have you always been a fashionista?

I'd say yes, for the most part. A fashionista in my own unique way.... I definitely dressed differently in school and was the "odd-ball" of the bunch..... but I'd say that now that I'm on my own in LA, I've developed a better sense of style.

10.) What can we expect from you in the future?

You can expect to see more fashion shows, hopefully selling in boutiques, my other line being launched.....

Tell me about your craft/mediums. My craft is constructing ready to wear pieces which consists mainly of draped looks.

Why do you love your particular mediums?
The one thing I love about working with draped looks is using knit fabrics. The great thing about this fabric is that it contours with the body accenting your best feature and also providing comfort. I also enjoy contrasting colors whether it be mixing and matching fabrics or working with dye baths.

-My influences come from the world around me.. I am especially influenced by music and movies from the past.

-All of my work can be found on my website www.leondrarenee.com .
-I am currently employed full time in the jewelry industry. One of my favorite hobbies includes roller skating.

-“Handmade Movement” to me means a large group of creative individuals designing/creating unique products the old fashion way. i.e without the use of computers

-The space I spend my time creating is in my apartment. I have sectioned off a small space in my studio apartment where I can drape on the dress form or create looks on the computer. Since I started draping I have somehow accumulated more fabric than I need. So I have been adjusting my work.

- I have so many favorite handmade pieces but if I had to pick one item it would be any kind of one of kind scarves.

- The most supportive would have to be my family. They each have their own way of motivating me when I feel like giving up.

When the store was established:
I sold shirts and bags with a friend in 2004. bumblesea was launched as an independant project in 2006.
What materials you prefer to work with: I love silver. if I screw something up I can melt it down and start again. it's a very forgiving material to work with.
What kind of inspiration you draw on: the majority of my work resembles flora or fauna. unusual plants are my main obsession. I have a pair of scissors in my purse so I can take clippings of any plants I like so I can start a cloned plant at home.
What is in the future for your company: my goal for the next few weeks is to launch a new acrylic jewelry line. once that's taken care of I'd like to start a second boutique to carry items made by other artists and designers. I've met so many talented people while working on bumblesea, and promoting my own work day after day is less than inspiring sometimes.
How is your store going today: bumblesea is doing well. I just relaunched about a month ago and I've already gotten some great press and snagged some interviews.

More than 3,000 Art lovers packed the Vanguard nightclub in Hollywood to attend Project Ethos’ latest soiree, “Lift Off.” On June 5th, Project Ethos showcased local emerging talent with an art installation, live concert headlining music act Paradiso Girls and runway show. Between the fashion show and live performances partygoers were glued to the glossy runway which upcoming designers like , Cindy Ayvar & Golnessa Farmanara Goci, Jazmin Whitley Li Cari,Designs by Daisy Gonzalez, Stephen Hohenwarter Lauren Seldomridge Ausfahr, Julia Lovan Dresses by Julia Lovan and M.C.Floresca by Maria Floresca showcased their line.

There were also several celebrity attendees like, Chudney Ross, Project Runways Jerrell Scott, the infamous Alexis Arquette and many others that I did not have the honor of meeting.

Over all the entire show was amazing and if you are a new to the art scene then project Ethos is definitely the avenue you should take.

What made you decide to start your own business?
Well I've never liked working for others. Ever since the age of 16 when I had my first job at Chuck E. Cheese, I knew it was going to be a problem. I remember the second day on the job, I had to dress up as Chuck E. and one of the kids next to me threw up. My boss told me to go in the back, get dressed, and clean up the throw up. I refused, over and over until my job was threatened and I gave in, swallowed my pride, and cleaned the mess. From that day on I told my self that whatever i planned on doing for the rest of my life, i would not work for anyone but my self.

What is your business name and why?
As the time passed I became more and more interested in God. Before this time in my life I always told my self that God was for the older people in life, and that i was to young too have the self discipline that adults have. But as i kept putting up walls of resistance, God kept knocking them down. God began to speak to me, and opening my eyes to the worldly things of life. At the age of 18, I began to look at things way different. Things that used to be fun just weren't fun anymore. Things that used to look right now looked wrong.

Is there a meaning behind your business?
As a 18 year old, I began to to look at what i was wearing and asking my self if my appearance was a representation of God. I started to look at it as if i worked for a business and never wore the uniform. None of the customers would ask me question, they would just think i was one of them. Thats how I started to look at the world, i am a servant for God; I work for him. I want people to ask me questions about God and how to serve. Unfortunately at that time in my life, i was wearing the total opposite. I was wearing clothing that i didn't even know what it represented like sculls, death images etc....
How did your business become so prominent in your life?
So i developed a clothing line that represented HIM. I wanted to make a clothing line that anyone could wear but also one look at me and they know what I'm about. I wanted to create clothing that is stylish, but also portrays a positive look. So I started thinking of names, and praying, asking God "What do you want to name your creation?" After I prayed on it for a couple days, My mom came to me with a name. The name was MALACHI. I asked her, " What did he do, and what does his name mean?'" She began to read a scripture it said " See i will send my messenger who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the lord you are seeking will come to his temple the messenger of the covenant, who you desire will come says the lord almighty." Malachi 3:1. Malachi was the last apostle who wrote in the old testaments. He was also the most important apostle in the bible because he sent the message of when the lord was coming. She said you also are trying to send a message, so thats how it became Malachi. I try to send a message through ever shirt. My goal is to help people that are not interested in Word and to hopefully be interested through fashion. I put a scripture on every shirt so they can look it up and find out the images meaning. I am now 20 years of age, i have been doing it for 3 years and what ever God's will is, is also my will and i will never stop pursuing it.
